ITIF analysis: India should drop localization policies, join trade talks

India needs to drop its policies that promote domestically manufactured goods over foreign competition and smooth out its regulatory process on the regional, state and federal levels in order to spur innovation in the country’s high-tech sectors, a U.S. tech group says in a new report.

The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation analysis was authored by Robert D. Atkinson, the organization’s president, and Stephen Ezell, a senior analyst there. They fault moves by the country’s leaders away from trade liberalization efforts for India’s economic slowdown this decade.

“In recent years this has been replaced by an economic development approach that has prioritized expanding domestic manufacturing and import substitution rather than across-the-board productivity growth, which has in part contributed to India’s recent embrace of several trade-distorting ‘innovation mercantilist’ policies,” Atkinson and Ezell write… https://www.politicopro.com/search/?adv=0&key=itif
