A bipartisan group of Governors of 14 American provinces has urged US president Barack Obama to raise the issue of alleged unfair trade policies of India threatening US jobs, when he meets Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the White House tomorrow.

In a letter to Obama, the group alleged that Indian policies have resulted in discrimination against foreign companies, which hinders businesses” ability to compete fairly and ultimately threatens US exports and jobs.

“Furthermore, given India”s role as an economic leader amongst emerging economies, there is concern that India”s policies may have a spillover effect to other countries,” the Governors said in the letter dated September 24, which was released to the press yesterday on the eve of the arrival of Singh to Washington.

Signatories to the letter include Sam Brownback, Governor of Kansas, Tom Corbett, Pennsylvania, Nathan Deal, Georgia, Mary Fallin, Oklahoma, Bill Haslam, Tennessee, John Hickenlooper, Colorado, Jay Inslee, Washington, John R Kasich, Ohio, Paul LePage, Maine, Dannel P Malloy, Connecticut, Martin O”Malley, Maryland, C L ”Butch” Otter, Idaho, Peter Shumlin, Vermont and Scott Walker, Wisconsin.

Hickenlooper and Fallin are co-chairs of the National Governors Association.

The strongly-worded letter by the group, many of whom have led trade missions to India in the recent past, has been welcomed by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), which has launched an extensive advertisement blitz against India”s economic policies.

The campaign includes micro-targeted digital ads in numerous influential publications, print ads in major news outlets such as Politico, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Roll Call and The Hill and ads at Dulles International Airport.
